Overview of Quest for Japanese Fluency 1

Quest for Japanese Fluency 1 is a unique Japanese online course that introduces Japanese culture as a foundation to studying the Japanese language for pre-college students. The manga-style illustrations depict a group of students from around the world who are studying at a high school in Japan. 

The Teacher-led Courses are taught by professional teachers. The course runs for twelve weeks meeting online twice times a week. The content of this course is the equivalent of studying Japanese for one school year at the high school level. 

At the end of the course, successful students will receive a Certification of Completion


AP® Japanese & Unit Themes:

There are six theme-based units which correlate with the six themes suggested by the College Board for Advanced Placement ® (AP® ) World Language and Culture courses. Both levels of Quest for Japanese Fluency create a solid foundation for students to prepare for AP®. The unit themes are relevant to pre-college students’ lives while introducing Japanese culture.  

Access to Course Materials: 

You will receive access to the course two days before the course starts. You will continue to have access for one more month after the course ends. During this time, you will be able to review the materials and download any notes that you took in the note-taking app within the course.

Chat with your instructor: You can send a message to your instructor between classes, if you are completely stuck and cannot move on. 

Audio: Audio for each conversation and listening exercise is embedded in the textbook for practice anytime.

Video: Embedded animated videos of hiragana and katakana show stroke order and readings. The kanji videos include on-yomi, kun-yomi, meanings and sample phrase or word.

Vocabulary flash cards: Flash cards are built into the lesson page. So, you don’t have to make your own or go to a different application to practice.  

Support for reading: Hiragana is used throughout the textbook with reading supports to encourage students to learn the scripts quickly. Kanji are introduced from the beginning to provide a solid foundation for AP® exam.

Code of Conduct
  • Students are expected to arrive on time and stay for the entire class. If you cannot attend the class, please notify your instructor immediately. 
  • Students are expected to have their cameras on with a virtual background during class time. If you need assistance with adding a background to your account, please discuss this with your instructor. 
  • Students will have their mics turned off unless they are asked to speak or have been called on for a question. If you are unable to use your mic for a class, please inform the teacher immediately. 
  • If a student has a question outside of class time, the student may send a chat message to the instructor within the course. All messages should be polite and written in complete sentences with specific questions about the content of the lesson. 
  • In most classes, students will engage in speaking practice random partners in breakout sessions within the online meeting. While in the breakout sessions, the students will practice in a timely fashion without unnecessary discussion. All students will be polite, encouraging and supportive of each other during the breakout sessions.  Any inappropriate behavior should be reported to the instructor immediately.
